Keeping Up with The Vampire Diaries' Damon and Katherine
At the recent Scream Awards, held by Spike TV, I had the chance to briefly catch up with two of the stars of The Vampire Diaries dvd, a show I recently discovered was rather ridiculously and surprisingly addictive, via a summer marathon of Season 1 episodes. Seriously, folks, if you're not watching, you'd be pretty amazed by some of the twists and turns this sucker takes. In the meantime, here's a spoiler warning that events up through last week's episode are discussed here.
On my mind during my time talking with both Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev was Katherine, Dobrev's other character, who is causing all sorts of mayhem now that she's back in Mystic Falls. Damon spent over a century trying to get Katherine back, only to have her oh-so-coldly reveal he was little more than a pawn to her. So would he still give her a chance, if she came to him? Said Somerhalder, "I don't think so. I think that with the whole Katherine thing is allowing him to be more introspective about what he's learned and how he's gotten to where he is. He then paused, smiled and added, "No way. She's a bitch! She really f**ked him over!" One thing that continues to amuse me on The Vampire Diaries dvd box set is how people Damon has actively tried to murder, like Alaric and Jeremy, then become his confidants and allies. Laughed Somerhalder, "I know! It's crazy. It's the weirdest thing. It's like, wait a minute! What's going on here?"
This past week saw Katherine's ally Mason taken out by Damon, but as she revealed at the end of the episode, that was fairly inconsequential to Katherine. As Dobrev explained, "Oh, you'd be stupid to think that Katherine is not up to something at all times. She's always three steps ahead of everybody. She anticipates something going wrong in every scenario and she plans for the mistakes and how she'll counter it. She's such a smart, complicated woman who's powerful and crazy and doesn't care about anything or anyone, except herself. She's very selfish."
