Brando Movie Adapted for TV

Do you remember The Freshman? It's been nearly twenty years since the Matthew Broderick / Marlon Brando comedy was released and it's not exactly an oft-mentioned movie – though personally, I think it was a very funny one. However, USA has decided to bring The Freshman back in a big way, as they develop a TV series based on the film.

The Hollywood Reporter says Andrew Bergman, who wrote and directed the film, is writing the pilot to the series. The film was about Broderick's college freshman taking a job, only to realize he's working for a mafia boss (Brando – sending up his iconic Godfather role).

USA has been focusing on shows centered around comedic-toned crime solvers/fighters, including Psych, Burn Notice and the just-ended Monk. USA's Bill McGoldrick tells the Reporter, "The big challenge is to not repeat ourselves too often, and Freshman was a fresh way to approach light character drama that was within the bull's-eye (of our brand)."

Sony is producing The Freshman, along with three other potential USA projects in development - Dr Donna, about a sports therapist; Partners in Crime, about ex-spouses who are private eyes; and Scales of Justice, about an "overweight ex-cop who leads his overeater support group in fighting crime."Monk Seasons 1-8 DVD Boxset
