'Star Trek's Chris Pine in Talks to Play Tom Jack Ryan

Chris Pine went boldly in rebooting the venerable "Star Trek" franchise, and now wants to work on reviving a more down-to-Earth character.

Pine is in early talks to take over the role of Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan for Paramount Pictures,

according toVariety. In a departure for the series, the upcoming project would not be based on one of Clancy's books, but an original script by "The Four Feathers" screenwriter Hossein Amini.

There's no word how the role would affect Pine's future "Star Trek " projects, though the actor has been vocal about seeking roles in other franchises, including "The A-Team" and DC Comics' Green Lantern. The character of Ryan, meanwhile, has been played in the past by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and (in an earlier attempt to reboot the series) Ben Affleck.
