Summary of  Modern Family Seasons 1-5 DVD Boxset 

season 1

Jay's family tries to function despite the age difference between himself and his second wife, Gloria. Claire's and Phil's family tries to punish their son and watch over their eldest daughter and her new boyfriend. Mitchell tries to hide the fact that he and his partner Cameron have just adopted a baby daughter in Vietnam from his family until Cameron invites Mitchell's family without consulting him (which is revealed to be the other two families, Jay being Mitchell's father and Claire being Mitchell's older sister). 

season 2

Claire & Haley are at home sick while Phil tries to find an annoying chirping smoke detector. Gloria and Manny go to Jay's work place much to Jay's dismay and Cameron takes Lily to a commercial shoot against Mitchell's wishes.

Eeryone gathers at a restaurant for Manny's birthday when Manny has a mini-life crisis of getting older, Phil and Claire have a race to see who can get there faster, and Mitchell and Cam get stuck at the mall looking for a gift. 

season 3

Phil and Claire's encounter with an annoying city councilman  on the campaign trail gets Claire thinking about throwing her hat into the ring. Meanwhile, Gloria's offers for help fall on deaf ears with Jay, who's frustrated at work, and Manny, who's worried about school; and Mitchell and Cameron have a hit-and-run fender bender that leads to a confrontation with a kid who's bothering Haley.

season 4

Claire must rein in her enthusiasm for Halloween and keep her celebration kid-friendly; Phil decides to hold an open house on Halloween; Mitch and Cam have a costume party; Gloria's hormones make her more quick-tempered than usual.

Season 5

Modern Family employs an ensemble cast. The series focuses on Jay Pritchett, his daughter Claire Dunphy , and his son Mitchell Pritchett who live in Los Angeles. Claire is a homemaker married to Phil Dunphy; they have three children, Haley , a teenager concerned most with popularity and boys, Alex, the smart middle child and Luke, the offbeat only son.
